Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of early maladaptive schemas on sexuality in Protestant evangelical marriages in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, examining the impact of religious beliefs on cognitive structures in shaping intimate dynamics. A qualitative, phenomenological, and descriptive approach was used, incorporating experimental therapeutic interventions. The methodology included the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-L2), the Mvelazquez Relational Dynamics Questionnaire, the Sexual Myths Scale (SMS), interviews, and psychotherapeutic sessions. The sample consisted of 10 couples from various religious congregations. Findings indicated a prevalence of sexual disorders among males: pornography addiction (40%), premature ejaculation (30%), erectile dysfunction (20%), and hypoactive sexual desire (20%). Among females, the prevalent disorders were anorgasmia (50%), hypoactive sexual desire (40%), and vaginismus (10%). The predominant maladaptive schemas identified were self-sacrifice and emotional inhibition, with the primary coping mode being that of the undisciplined/impulsive child, arising from rigid religious interpretations and traditional gender roles. 18 participants shifted their schemas and coping modes to healthier patterns, resolving their sexual dysfunctions and improving dyadic relational dynamics by 90%. In conclusion, the study highlights the effectiveness of schema therapy in deactivating dysfunctional patterns and enabling profound changes.
